Jefferson High School clinched the region 8-AA title and increased its win streak to 11 this past week.
The Dragons demolished Riverside Military Academy (12-2 in five innings) on Friday and followed it up with a convincing win over Rabun County (6-1) on Tuesday.
While a double-header against Oglethorpe County Friday in Jefferson will close out the region schedule, an unexpected Patriot sweep will not change the standings. Dragons (20-2, 12-0) are no. 1.
“This team is really something,” coach Tommy Knight said. “It is a team that has figured out how to win ball games.”
Every game it seems another batch of players or a different pitcher combines for the win, which could be by one run or 10.
The team’s youth does not seem to be a factor, the coach said.
“We are still pretty young, we’re playing a lot of sophomores and have won a lot of close ball games,” he said. “Pretty much every time we’ve gone deep in the games, they have figured out how to pull it out in the end. That is a sign of a group of kids with a lot of character. They don’t give up. They compete.”
On Friday, Jacob Page earned the win. He allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out six. Micah Carpenter (2-4, 1RBI) and Trent Sorrells (3-4, 2RBI), and Jake Franklin (2-4, 4RBI) each had multi-hit games.
Carpenter earned the win against Rabun County and Franklin got the save on Tuesday.
At the plate, Carpenter (2-3, 1 RBI), Hanon Price (2-4, 2 RBI), Franklin (3-4, 2 RBI), Alex Gaba (2-3, 1 RBI) each earned more than one hit.
The Dragons will host Commerce in the teams’ regular season finale at 5:55 p.m. next Wednesday.
“We have to finish the season before we start the playoffs,” Knight said. “We don’t want to go into the playoffs on a bad note, having lost a game or a couple of games. We just have to play these last three ball games one at a time.”
