After a hard fought tournament, Mill Creek finished second in area 7-AAAAA. The Lady Hawks, along with area rivals Norcross, North Gwinnett and Collins Hill, secured a berth in the state volleyball playoffs which begin Thursday, October 23.
In the first day of the region tournament, Mill Creek won two and lost one.
The Hawks started the day with a 2-0 victory over Meadowcreek. Mill Creek beat the Lady Mustangs 25-2 and 25-14.
The match took three games and ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Lady Hawks. The Bulldogs lost the first game 20-25, but fought back to win the next two by scores of 25-19 and 15-20.
After moving into the loser’s bracket, Mill Creek was pitted against Duluth. The Lady Hawks won that match 2-0 (25-11, 25-16).
Mo Simmons led Mill Creek with 21 kills and eight blocks. Ashley Jackson had 32 assists and Taylor Alkire added seven aces. Alyson White posted a solid defensive performance at libero.
On the last day of the tournament, Mill Creek faced Collins Hill, North Gwinnett and Norcross.
The Lady Hawks beat Collins Hill by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. Mill Creek also defeated North Gwinnett in two games (25-23, 25-15).
In the championship match, Mill Creek squared off against Norcross. In a long, five-game battle, the Lady Blue Devils held on to win 3-2.
Mill Creek won the first game 25-20, lost the second 14-25 and then won the third 25-21. Norcross won the final two games by scores of 25-12 and 25-4.
Simmons had 29 kills and nine blocks. Jackson had 53 assists for the day. Simmons and Jackson were both named to the area 7-AAAAA all-star team.
