Madison County’s girls’ golf team topped several area opponents on the links last week.
The girls defeated Habersham Central 134 to 151 at Apple Mountain March 12.
Katie Jane Phillips led Madison County with a 41. Anna Tolbert shot a 43, while Megan Boswell finished with a 50 and Nicole Jordan shot a 62.
The lady golfers followed that up the following day, firing a 135 at Double Oaks to down over East Jackson, 179, and Jackson County, 162.
Tolbert scored a rare eagle on the par 4 second hole at Double Oaks March 13.
“I know that's a first since I've taken over,” said Madison County golf coach Brent Bird. “I'll have to check because it may be the first in school history during a match or tournament. Either way, that's something that hasn't happened very often.”
The MCHS girls traveled to the Chatthoochee Invitational in Gainesville Saturday. Boswell led Madison County with a 93. Phillips shot a 96. Tolbert shot a 102 and Jordan finished with a 111.
“We didn't play as well as we wanted, but once we finished, the scores weren't as bad as I had thought,” said Bird. “I wanted to break 300 between our top three girls and we were able to do that.”
The girls defeated Commerce 137 to 178 Monday afternoon at Double Oaks. Scorers included: Phillips, 41; Boswell, 48; Tolbert, 48; and Jordan, 51.
The boys’ golf team defeated East Jackson last week 203-207, with Taylor Crouse leading the way with a 41. Tyler Drake shot a 48 and CJ Rodrigues finished with a 53.
“Taylor had another solid round,” said Bird. “He was about a foot away on hole number five from a hole-in-one. He ended up with two birdies during the round, which wasn't bad for the shape the greens were in. CJ Rodrigues played the best he has all year and that helped us a lot.”
On Monday, the guys dropped a match to Commerce 199 to 186.
Crouse led the Raiders with a 42. Other scores included: Drake, 51, Sam Francis, 51; Rodrigues, 55.
“I was glad to see us break 200 for the first time this year,” said Bird. “We're ahead of where we were last year which is a positive for us.”
Madison County will host the Red Raider Classic Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m., at Highland Walk Golf Course. Schools participating include Franklin County, Morgan County, Prince Avenue, Stephens County, Commerce, Hart County, Habersham Central, Lumpkin County and Flowery Branch.
