Madison County all stars headed to state championship
The Madison County Recreation Department’s 10-and-under boys’ all-star team has advanced to the state tournament this weekend in Gordon County.
The team traveled to Habersham County this past weekend to participate in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s 7th District Basketball tournament. And with wins over Habersham County, Jackson County and Dawson County, the boys earned the right to advance to the GRPA State Tournament this weekend.
In what may have been the best match-up of the tournament, Madison County opened up its tournament play against host Habersham County. Madison County came out with a relentless full-court trap and jumped out to an early 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The guys maintained their four-point lead at the half going into the break up, 22-18. They extended the lead to seven at the end of three quarters, with a 31-24 advantage going into the final period.
Habersham County staged a furious rally and took a two-point lead late in the game. Madison County’s players never got rattled and after a technical on a Habersham County player, tied the game with a free throw at 38-38 with less than a minute to play in the contest.
That’s when things really got exciting. On a bang-bang play, Habersham County’s coach called a time-out that came just a fraction of a second before a foul was called on Madison County. The time-out nullified the foul, and there was just 1.8 seconds left on the clock. Habersham County did not have any more time-outs, so Madison County sealed the win by hitting two pressure packed free throws as a result of that technical foul.
Madison County advanced by a 40-38 final. Scorers for Madison County were Brock McElroy, 9 points; I’Ketric Barnett, 8 points; Garrett Garner, 7 points; Ben Pethel, 6 points; TyQuaveon Chappell, 4 points; Devin Walton, 3 points; Nolan Hill, 2 points; and Ben Bray, 1 point.
Jackson County was the semi-final opponent. Madison County led 9-4 after one quarter and took a 17-8 lead into the half. Madison County doubled up the score after three with a 25-12 advantage with one quarter to play. Madison County’s 36-25 win propelled them into the finals against Dawson County.
Nolan Hill led the scoring with 10 points, and was followed by Brock McElroy’s 8 points. Garrett Garner added 5 points, Ben Bray and Elijah Wessinger each scored three points, I’Ketric Barnett, TyQuaveon Chappell and Devin Walton all added a basket to round out the scoring.
The tournament championship came down to a highly anticipated match-up between Dawson County and Madison County.
That anticipated showdown never materialized as Madison County used their quickness to hop out to a quick 16-8 lead after the first quarter, and edged that lead to nine points to carry a 28-19 into the half. Outscoring Dawson County by 10 points in the third quarter, Madison County took a commanding 43-21 lead into the last quarter. The final score was 50-26. Nolan Hill and Brock McElroy led all scorers with 13 points each. Garrett Garner had another good game and finished with nine points.
Ben Pethel scored five points, and Ben Bray and Devin Walton added four points. Logan Griffeth added a basket to round out the scoring.
Madison County will now play the District 6 champion in the GRPA State Tournament on Friday night.

Madison County opened tournament action with a 57-31 win over Dawson County.
Adam Metts led the scoring with 15 points. Andre’ Witt followed with nine and Luke Perdue added eight. Patrick Heard, Ford Bird and Derrick Ware all scored six points. Hayden Morris added four and Demyus Watts chipped in two.
The win put Madison County in the championship game against Barrow County.
Madison County got off to a slow start in the first quarter and could never make up the gap, losing 57-36. Patrick Heard had a team-high nine points. He was followed by Adam Metts, 7; Ford Bird, 5; Andre’ Witt, 4; and Derrick Ware, 4. Blake Taylor, Chase Bridges and Luke Perdue each added baskets for Madison County. Demyus Watts finished the scoring by hitting a free throw.

The Madison County 12-and-under girls all-star team recently traveled to Habersham County to compete in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s 7th District basketball tournament.
Madison County opened tournament action against Habersham County. This was a hard fought battle all throughout the game, and Madison County was finally able to get a little breathing room late in the final quarter, winning 29-23.
Sydney Armstrong was Madison County’s high scorer with 11 points. Tykeria Barnett tossed in 9, followed by Emily Austin, who had four. Carly Damron and Kaleigh Nix each scored a basket, and Cloie Dickerson added a free throw. This win let Madison County advance to the finals against a very tall and athletic team from Dawson County.
Dawson County got off to a fast start in the first quarter and outscored Madison County in the next three quarters to claim a 45-27 win. Tykeria Barnett had a team-high 10 points and was followed in the scoring column by Cloie Dickerson’s nine points. Sydney Armstrong scored five, while Carly Damron added a three-pointer.
