In the week of the Super Bowl — and certainly on the night of the game itself — all other sports take a back seat to the biggest game of the year.
The game is crowned as one of the most watched events every year, last year an estimated 111.3 million people watched the New York Giants and the New England Patriots fight for the title.
The culmination of the two best teams in America’s favorite sport squaring off for the title, along with whatever superstar performance halftime show the NFL gets, and the world’s most expensive commercials make up the recipe for one entertaining night of television.
This year was no different; there were many different storylines from the Harbaugh brothers going against each other for the Super Bowl, to Ray Lewis playing his last game, to the San Francisco 49ers trying to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl titles all time with six.
There were no shortage of storylines leading into the game, and once the game started the number of storylines multiplied.
But let’s start with the Super Bowl commercials. Let’s be honest, a lot of people watch the Super Bowl simply for the commercials, yeah that was strange to say, people actually watching something just for the commercials.
Every year companies pay millions of dollars for a matter of seconds during the game. There were plenty of good commercials this year, but overall it seemed to be lacking some of the luster that it has had in years past.
One of the most uncomfortable commercials this year was the godaddy.com commercial, I’d rather not write about it but if you would like to go watch it again be my guest.
The funniest commercial this year might have been the Doritos “Goat 4 Sale” commercial, but of course that is all determined on everyone’s own perception. Everyone has their own opinion about the commercials and which ones were the best. Just like I believe that the Iron Man 3 teaser was one of the best parts of the night – just saying.
So how about the halftime show? This year Beyoncé was the star who had the opportunity to perform at midfield during the game’s intermission. And along with her was the reunion of Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé’s old counterparts joined her for a few minutes before the spotlight shined once again on her.
I’ve never really been a big fan of the halftime show, if anything I watch it to see if there are any cool effects that take place. I’m sure Beyoncé fans thought that the performance was great, and maybe it was, but I think I was more focused on the chips and salsa waiting for me in the other room.
So as for the game itself, let me begin by saying how thankful I am for the 34-minute power outage delay. I do think that it is absolutely absurd that that can happen in the Super Bowl of all games, but I am very thankful that it happened because the game was starting to get away from San Francisco.
The Ravens had just taken a 28-6 lead and it seemed like they were about to finish off the 49ers early in the third quarter. It ended up being a great game that had a very entertaining conclusion.
What is shocking is that Joe Flacco won the MVP. He certainly deserves it for his performance in Sunday’s big game, but I am still not sold. The Ravens did what they had to do but the fact that they even made it to the Super Bowl still shocks me. But congrats to the Ravens, they were impressive on both sides of the ball in every postseason game and fully deserve their title. Overall, this year’s Super Bowl was very entertaining and made for a great watch.
