THE JEFFERSON girls’ basketball team finished 1-2 in the team’s own Tabo’s Tip-Off Tournament, losing to Franklin County 44-28 Saturday on the final day of action.
“Franklin County has a good ball club,” Jefferson coach Jason Gibson said. “They’re young but they have some talented kids. I felt like we played well for stretches, except offensively.”
The contest was tied at 14 at the half, and Jefferson actually led 16-14 two minutes into the third period. Franklin County, however, went on a 12-6 run to end the quarter and took over in the final four minutes of the game to push their lead out to double digits.
Jefferson resumes action this week against West Hall in a game that, in all likelihood, will be moved from Friday to Thursday to avoid a conflict with the Dragon football team’s state playoff game.
The Lady Dragons claimed their first win of the year earlier in the week during Wednesday action in the tournament.
Sarah Wood scored 14 points and Jaclyn Coleman added 12 as the Jefferson girls routed Therrell 54-12.
Cathryn Knight hit a couple of three-pointers and finished with eight points as Jefferson picked up a win in the losers’ bracket of the Tabo’s Tip-Off tournament.
The Lady Dragons took the Lady Panthers out of this game from the opening tip running out to a 22-4 lead in the opening quarter.
Jefferson maintained a 31-6 lead at the half.
Therrell, an Atlanta-area Class AAAA team, didn’t score its 10th point of the game until the 3:11 mark in the fourth quarter.
Nine different Lady Dragons scored in the 42-point win.
