The curtain fell on the first full varsity season for the Bethlehem Christian Academy football team Friday night.
The Knights finished the 2012 season 3-7 overall after falling to perennial state power Thomas Jefferson 71-26. The Jaguars are once again region champs and are the favorites to win the GISA Class A title.
“Offensively, they are as good of a team as we’ve seen,” said BCA coach Don Garmon. “They run multiple sets. They’ll be in the wishbone one play and then four wides. They will then work out of the shotgun and then go to the Wing T formation. Defensively, you have to be on your toes.”
Garmon said he believes defensive coordinator Nick Pou and offensive coordinator Lance Fendley had sound game plans going into the contest.
“Defensively, we had our players in the right spots,” Garmon said. “With their speed, however, if you miss a tackle and then get wide on you, then it doesn’t leave you with much of a chance.”
In their scout work for the game, BCA coaches calculated Thomas Jefferson, in its game with fellow region member Nathanael Greene, scoring every 2.7 snaps.
“We are a young team trying to get better,” Garmon said. “You have to be able to stop them. All they were doing (in the second half) was lining it up and running the football.
It’s our job to stop them. (Thomas Jefferson) Coach (Chuck) Wimberly has his team coached up and ready to play.”
In Friday’s game against the Jaguars Chandler Garmon passed for 245 yards with touchdowns to Ben Morgan and Jacob Fincher. Morgan caught seven passes for 124 yards while Fincher had six grabs for 112 yards.
P.J. Klein also had 29 yards passing in the final game of the 2012 season for BCA.
Defensively, Matt Masters had four solo tackles with six assists while Garmon recorded four solos, five assists and an interception.
Kevin Green totaled three solo tackles and two assists with Jared Martin finishing with two solo stops and three assists. Morgan added two solo stops and four assists while Klein had four assists and an interception.
“When you look at the season as a whole, there were were many accomplishments,” Coach Garmon said. “We won three games, but could have easily had more. It came down to us having to battle injuries as the season progressed. That was probably the toughest part.”
