Cheer Doggs to defend state title

The Winder-Barrow High School competition cheerleaders are typically comfortable on the state’s big stage.

The Cheer Doggs will get the chance to defend their state championship from a season ago when they travel back to Columbus. WBHS finished third during Saturday’s state sectionals to earn the chance to return to the state finals.

“I am super excited about our performance Saturday,” said coach Jerrie Hulsey. “A girl’s foot slipped out of a boy’s hand in the pyramid and it bobbled and while it didn’t come down, we lost points. One of our co-eds moved just a little. Otherwise it was a great day to be a Bulldogg.”

Even with the point deductions for the mishaps, the Cheer Doggs took a solid third place.

Overall, Peachtree Ridge was first at sectionals followed by Chestatee, WBHS, Ola, Dacula, Archer, South Paulding and Apalachee. The eighth-place finish for AHS means the Cheer Cats will also advance to the state finals. Hulsey noted she was proud of the AHS squad as well. The Cheer Cats are coached by Meridith Wages, a former WBHS squad member who Hulsey coached.

Rounding out the top 16 were Parkview, Model, Perry, Jackson County, Camden County, Putnam County, Forsyth Central and Brookwood.

Team members for the 2012 Cheer Doggs include senior Cameron Cooper, juniors Kolby Estes, Ben Oxley, Jonathon Thornton, Aaron Jeswalk, Jared Glazier, Collin Cooper, Whitney Peels, Whitney Gunter, Charlee Horne, Brittney Crosby, Cathryn McNamara, sophomores Ethan Bergen, Sarah Elizabeth Jordan, Katelyn Hellums and freshmen Nina Moreno and Lindsay Hollis.

The Cheer Doggs are coached by Jerrie Hulsey, Danielle Hulsey, Courtney Hewatt and Clint Whitehead.
