Cross country: Staples leads Eagles at Mountain Invitational

EAST JACKSON’s Vladik Staples ran 17:34.8 Saturday — barely missing his personal best — to lead the Eagles to a 16th-place finish out of 29 teams at the Mountain Invitational in Helen.


Staples, who has run 17:35 or better in three out of his last four meets, finished 21st overall out of 199 runners.

Noah Hulett ran an 18:00 to finish 39th overall and Cory McClung also broke 19 minutes, finishing with a 18:57 to place 88th.

Rounding out the scoring for East Jackson were Tyler Cone (19:54, 137th) and Cody McQuillen (20:34, 163rd).

On the girls’ side, the Lady Eagles placed 19th out of 23 teams.

Hayleigh Smith led East Jackson with a 23:02 to finish 65th. She was followed by Maegan Davidson (24:00, 84th), Robin Adair (24:13, 88th), Bailey Brooks (25:10, 104th) and Caroline Flynn (26:41, 129th).
