A short-handed Mill Creek team suffered a 31-3 loss to Starr’s Mill this past Sunday.
Missing five players and playing a faster and fitter Starr’s Mill, the Hawks struggled against two speedy backs in the game played at Fuller’s Park in Marietta.
“The score line might not show it, but we were much stronger this week than in our inaugural game two weeks ago,” said Mill Creek coach Chris Vlok.
Mill Creek’s only points came when fly-half Patrick Mead tackled a hard-charging Starr’s Mill player. The Starr’s Mill player was penalized after failing to release the ball when tackled.
Mill Creek elected to go for the points with a long-distance kick from full back James Dunn. Dunn slotted through the uprights from 35 meters out.
The Hawks were a threat coming out of the backfield with centers Shawn Guilbeaux, Tyler Soto and Chakier Francis each getting extended runs.
Mill Creek’s inability to develop multiple phases from good possession cost them, although they did get close with flanker Jansen Arcenaux being pushed out of bounds less than a meter from the tryline.
Mill Creek’s Ben McDaniel was honored as “Man of the Match” for outstanding tackling and disrupting the Starr’s Mill backs early in their possessions.
