Connell, Wright pace WBHS runners

The Winder-Barrow High School cross country runners were at their personal best again Saturday.

Competing in the Battle of Atlanta, the Lady Bulldoggs were fifth overall while the WBHS boys were eighth. Caitlin Connell paced the WBHS girls finishing eighth overall with a time of 20:27, a season best. William Wright was the first runner to complete the course for the boys in 17:31.

“It was another strong performance,” said coach Michael Lofton. “I thought we would finish higher than it had been predicted, but both of our teams exceeded my predictions.”

Whitley Kennedy (21:15), Anna Dean (21:35), Amber Palmero (21:58) and Kiana Perez (22:03) each had standout races. Kennedy, Palmero and Perez each set a new season best time.

“Everyone is getting better and pushing each other,” Lofton said of the Lady Bulldoggs. “They all ran smart races.”

Wright set a season best for the boys. Alex Martinez was praised for his effort in completing the race in 18:10. Teammate Skyler Lowe was right behind Martinez in 18:12. Nelson Lofton (18:17) and Timmy Villameter (18:31) rounded out the top five for WBHS.

“When you can run in a pack that way, it helps you with scoring points,” Lofton said. “We use each meet as a way to get a little better and we did that again.”
