EAST JACKSON picked up another win over its closest rivals, beating Jackson County Thursday on senior night 25-20, 25-18 in area play.
With the victory, the Eagles (5-18, 1-7) sent senior Rosie Melendez out in style in her final home match. She picked up four aces and three digs.
“She holds five team records and is just an all-around great player,” coach Tim Thomas said. “She’s played everywhere for our varsity team except middle hitter, and that only because of her height. She’s got that winner’s heart and drive, and we’re really going to miss her.”
Others contributing to the win were Madison Mealor, who had nine kills and eight digs. Mealor and Angela Hulsey combined for 11 assists.
East Jackson fell to North Oconee 25-13, 25-20 that same evening.
In junior varsity action, East Jackson notched its third victory over Jackson County this season.
East Jackson then fell to Gainesville, Oconee County and Winder-Barrow on Tuesday.
“It was a really strange night — one moment we looked like we could play with anyone, and the next we looked like we’d never touched a ball before,” Thomas said.
Mealor led the team with 13 kills and 10 assists. Rosie Melendez finished with nine assists and Jo Melende had five aces and four kills. The junior varsity beat Oconee County and Gainesville to improve to 11-6.
