Gainesville High School has run out of Barrow County teams to defeat.
The Red Elephants defeated their second Barrow team in as many weeks as they downed Apalachee High School 62-20 Friday night. Now Gainesville will look to take on the remainder of Region 8-AAAAA in coming weeks.
“They are a very good football team,” Wildcat coach Shane Davis said of Gainesville. “Defensively, it starts up front with their line. Offensively, they have the skill people to make it roll and they have been rolling.”
AHS managed just 148 yards of offense, 29 on the ground. Gainesville, meanwhile, scored touchdowns on its first six possessions to take control by halftime. It took the Red Elephants just 1:03 to put their first touchdown on the board on a 5-yard run by Deshaun Watson.
Gainesville led 49-0 at halftime to end any speculation on the outcome of the contest.
After Watson completed all 18 of his pass attempts the week before against Winder-Barrow, the junior was 17-of-20 against Apalachee, connecting with six different receivers.
He passed for 294 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Watson also rushed for 75 yards.
Gainesville improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA. AHS is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in region play.
“We clearly want to get better from this,” Davis said. “Hopefully, something good will come out of it.”
The Wildcat coaches had hoped to slow down the high-octane Red Elephant attack, but Gainesville had struck for several scores early.
AHS hosts Clarke Central in a rare Thursday night game this week at 7:30 p.m.
