IN A battle billed as “East vs. West,” Jackson County made sure it was an all-West side night.
The Panthers (3-1, 1-0) earned their first-ever win over East Jackson (0-4, 0-1), rolling up 40 first-half points in a 47-7 trouncing of the neighboring Eagles Friday at Panther Stadium.

Jackson County quarterback Kyle Daniel threw three touchdown passes — all to Xavier Harper — and added a rushing touchdown. Harper’s three touchdown receptions included a 74-yard score on the opening play of the second half.
Running back Dustin Scott also had two rushing touchdowns, and Keyshaun Curry returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown as the Panthers broke a two-game losing streak in this rivalry.
“Coming into this week, we had to practice like we would play,” said Scott, who scored on touchdown runs of 24 and two yards. “All throughout the whole week of practice, we had been sharp and had been executing the plays and everything, and coming out here and scoring that big in the first half, it was great to see how all our hard work is just paying off.”
Just as impressive was Jackson County’s defense. The Panthers only allowed the Eagles to cross midfield twice in the first half and forced East Jackson to punt five times. The Eagles finished with just 107 yards.
“Our defense, they came out and played hard,” Panther defensive lineman Chris Foster said. “I was really proud of our defense ... We had a lot of three-and-outs and we just played hard.”
Foster finished with six tackles, two assists, one sack and two tackles for loss. Linebacker Daivon Ledford led the Panthers with 10 tackles, four assists and one tackle for loss.
With the defense producing those three-and-outs, Jackson County built a 20-0 lead after the first quarter. The Panthers got a one-yard touchdown run by Daniel and touchdown passes from Daniel to Harper covering 17 and 15 yards.
“I told them we needed to start fast on both sides of the ball,” Jackson County coach Benji Harrison said. “I thought we did. Defensively, we continue to run to the football. I keep saying that. If we run to the football and get 11 hats to the ball, good things can happen ... Offensively, we’re starting to click and hopefully, we can just continue to build on it and get better every week.”
Scott broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter and added a two-yard score later in the period to put the Panthers up 34-0.
East Jackson’s Austin Beauchamp threw a two-yard touchdown to Casey Reed late in the second quarter for the Eagles’ only score, but Curry answered with his kickoff return for a touchdown to give Jackson County a 40-7 lead.
The Panthers’ 40 first-half points could very well be a Jackson County record.
“It may be,” Harrison said. “I’m not sure. I’m proud of them. They played well. I didn’t know how we would play. The kids had a great week. They did. They were focused. They really wanted this game.”
Daniel threw a little screen pass to Harper on the first play of the second half and the speedy junior took 74 yards for a score to put the Panthers up 47-7.
Eagle coach Brian Smith said that play as well as Jackson County’s big returns in the kicking game and East Jackson dropping a wide-open pass in the first quarter — which could have very well been a touchdown — seemed to sum up the Eagles’ season so far.
“All those we have chances on to make huge plays and we don’t and the opponent takes advantage, takes the crease that we give them and turn them into a huge advantage for themselves,” Smith said.
That advantage showed up in the stat sheet for Jackson County.
Daniel finished with 191 yards on 13-of-21 passing, and Harper tallied 110 yards receiving. Daniel has now thrown seven touchdown passes in the last two games, while Harper has six touchdown catches. Three of those touchdown catches have covered more than 50 yards.
The Panthers — who finished with 354 total yards – have now scored 86 points in their last two ball games, and players feel the offense is really starting to take form.
“We’ve come so far,” said Scott, who finished with 79 yards rushing. “Just to think about it is crazy. Coming from the scrimmage, we had a lot of work to do. We knew that and now that we’re starting to believe in the program, it’s starting to work. We still have a lot of work to do but it’s just getting better and better.”
The Panthers are 1-0 in region play with the win and that was one of the main objectives of the night for Jackson County.
“My harp on it was that it was the first region game, and we needed to play well in the first region game to get this thing started right,” Harrison said.
Bragging rights were also up for grabs, of course. For the Jackson County seniors, beating East Jackson was a moment they’d long been waiting for.
“I can’t even explain it right now,” Foster said. “It’s amazing. I don’t know. There’s no words to describe it.”
Said Scott: “It feels great, to come out here — (against) guys we know, guys we’ve played with a long time — (as) underdogs and actually win it to show who’s really on top now.”
This is like the 2009 season when after a 3-0 start and a couple of blowouts people were thinking playoffs. Then they lost to a terrible Morgan County team whose only win was against the Panthers that year. And then they followed that up with blowout losses to good teams like Eastside.
This team isn't accomplishing anything at all. We're going to see a typical over hyped Panther team get routed by North Oconee once again next week and everyone will see how horrible they still are.
This team deserves credit where credit was due. They looked good, played well and as a team they beat East. I don't know how they will fare in the next games, but no team knows that. However, these boys from Jackson deserve the respect and the acknowledgment of their hard work and the coaches with Jackson seem to be doing a GREAT JOB. My only complaint/ Question to Jackson would be-- WHAT is going on with your JV squad??
I mean seriously, look at who they've beaten and who they have left. Winder-Barrow is one of the worst teams in the state. They are riding a 28-game losing streak and haven't won since 2009. So how a 21-10 win over them impressive? Same with Athens Christian. Not only have they been bad for a while, but JCCHS beats them basically every time they play (the scrimmages and JV games). So what's different here? East Jackson is also a terrible team that somehow beat a superior JCCHS team the previous two years. This is their most impressive win (which isn't saying much) just because they finally were able to beat a dump team they couldn't beat the previous two times they played.
Now look at who they've lost to. Athens Academy is a very talented team who is right now 3-0. So how does JCCHS fare against them? They lost 28-0. It was so bad they just gave up before Athens could put up even more style points. Jefferson, who has more wins than the three teams JCCHS beat combined, beat them once again with ease (don't let some Panther fans convince you that the Dragons paid the referees and that JCCHS played them tough, because they didn't). So this shows that they can beat three teams who have a combined 1-11 record, but can't do anything against two teams with a combined 5-1 record.
Now look at whose left. North Oconee has recently made a living out of beating the tar out of JCCHS, and it isn't changing. They might have lost 50-14 to St. Pius X (a powerhouse that would put 80 up on JCCHS, so don't get carried away), but they've also beaten Madison County 49-0 and Athens Christian 44-0. This will be another one-sided beat down with JCCHS having nothing to offer North Oconee. Maybe they can throw in the towel like they did against Athens Academy.
Next is Franklin County. They could possibly win this game as Franklin County isn't that good. They beat a bad Madison County team 20-12, and lost to Stephens County 28-7 and Lanier 23-0. So JCCHS has a chance here, even though last time they went to Carnesville they lost 42-7.
Then comes Hart County, another team that's made a recent living off beating JCCHS. They are 0-3, losing to Cedar Shoals 21-0, Blessed Trinity 24-10, and Stephens County 49-39. But lets be honest, all three of those teams are better than the scrubs JCCHS beat. This will be another loss HCHS for the Panthers.
Then comes another winnable game against Oconee County. They've beaten Madison County 39-7 (teams in this region have a fascination with destroying the Red Raiders don't they), lost to Lanier 17-14, and lost to Monroe Area 62-14. They haven't been good for a while, so JCCHS can beat them. Unfortunately for them, the last two times they played OCHS they lost 45-17 and 20-0.
Then comes Elbert County. They've lost to Buford 14-3 and Cedar Shoals 35-28 while beating Evans 38-7. The fact they played Buford that close tells you how this ones going to end without having to even look at the overall record in the series. Senior Night will be a long night because the Blue Devils are handing out a one-sided beat down.
The final game is another nightmare waiting to happen because Morgan County has JCCH'S number no matter how bad they are. Their only win in 2008 was a 34-6 win at JCCHS. Their only win in 2009 was a 14-7 win over a 3-0 JCCHS that had won the FOX 5 Team of the Week three weeks prior. Now they are much improved, coming off a 8-3 season while opening 2012 with three wins over Monticello (34-6), Greene County (26-7), and Putnam County (39-16). MCHS has managed to beat JCCHS when they're god awful, so this time dominating the Panthers won't be a problem.
I'm not necessarily righting bad about JCCHS, I'm saying what will most likely happen. Their 3-1 start came against three dump teams (which they beat) and one good team (which they lost to). They have a chance at being 5-5 with Oconee and Franklin being possible wins, but I think 4-6 will be what the final record will be. BTW, the Jefferson game really wasn't that close.
Anyway, Who cares if they are playoff bound at least they have a chance now of not losing practically EVERY game they play.
Go Panthers! :)
This year has started the exact same way. They beat three teams with a combined record of 1-11 while losing to the only real team they've played handily. The only games they can win for the rest of the season are Franklin County and Oconee County. You know why? Because they bad teams. Meanwhile, all you Panther fans will see nothing has changed when North Oconee, Elbert County, Hart County, and Morgan County absolutely destroy them. BTW, I always said they could possibly reach 4-6 and never said they were going to be 1-9, so get your facts straight before you post it on the internet and look like a tool in front of everyone.
And don't even get me started on academics. Do you know how Jefferson and Jackson County's SAT scores compare? Do you know anything about how their Fine Arts programs compare, the variety and selection of honors or AP courses offered at either school, the special education populations and services that are available to those students with disabilities, etc.? You are clearly disgruntled about more than football. I hope things become more positive for you in the future.
Get over yourself.
"The student body walking around making fun of Jackson by wearing hill billy gear." Really? How do you know they were making fun of Jackson Co? The students have a "theme" each week, why do you assume they were making fun of anyone? Who are they making fun of on flourescent shirt night?
"Some have made it clear they don't want anyone moving into Jefferson unless they recruit you." Who are these "some"? Doesn't this sound ridiculous? Is there now some application you need to fill out and an approval process before you can move your family to the city of Jefferson and attend Jefferson schools? Do you know how stupid that statement sounds?
"I don't think we play our varsity players at our JV games and we didn't even use all our JV players against Jefferson." Really? So how many Jefferson varsity players were playing against Jackson in the JV game, do you know who they are? And you didn't play all your JV kids? Were you purposely keeping your best JV players from playing for some reason and that is why you got beat 46-8? Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me.
"The staff working this game were rude and disrespectful to the Jackson people that came- sad and then you have the way the Jefferson team was making sucker hits on the field-just shameful." What exactly happened where the staff was rude to Jackson people? I know a good number of the people who volunteer their time to work the games and they are some of the nicest and friendliest people you can meet. Sucker hits? Really, more excuses for just getting beat. I saw the game and I don't remember any hits that looked cheap to me, just kids playing hardnosed football at full speed.
Look people, I hate to tell you but none of these schools are perfect. Each one has their share of undesirables but most are just regular folks just like everyone else. Jefferson isn't perfect, JC isn't perfect, Commerce isn't perfect, EJ, etc. You are just encouraging this Sindel person by your continued responses, which I am sure is what he wants (I assume it is a he as I would hate to think it would be a she).
With all this talk about class, it seems those doing the most talking are lacking a bit themselves.
Support your team and stop bashing everyone else. Ignore ignorance and stop encouraging it with your own ridiculous responses.
I am especially interested in all this recruiting. What exactly is involved in this process? Are kids brought on campus, promised free lunch, the best locker and a special parking space? What exactly happens during this recruitment process? Are there home visits? You make a bold statement that it is a "known fact" Jefferson recruits but you haven;t provide a single "fact" to back that statement up.
Actually just to make this more informative for you and whoever else is being entertained...its not about the the recreation department...they actually have a great program, its some of the people you get to know on the teams...they are groomed to think they are better and they actually believe it. Not all...there are great families I know in Jefferson. I believe God created us equal and one group of people is not better than another just because of where they live, what school they go to, etc...It's ok...You are in denial and its ok. I think you need to relax and not get so upset because ultimately this is a discussion board...free speech. I know people who have been approached...there is your fact. I didn't ask for all the details, but if you would like I will try to make an effort to find that out next time I talk to them...At the end of the day it doesn't really matter, but that may be one of the many reasons we have this huge rivalry. Again, I don't lay in bed worrying about it, just thought I better give you a reply because I know your waiting for it...
I am sorry, "I know people who have been approached" is very weak and certainly not proof. What does "approached" mean? By a coach? An administrator? A parent? And you didn't ask for details (so you have none) but you come on a blog and make a statement as fact. Unless you can provide REAL evidence you are just spreading rumors that can't be corroborated. Anyone can make a statement, that doesn't make it fact.
Just because kids change schools doesn't mean they were recruited and changing schools isn't proof at all. I believe a Jefferson baseball player transferred to JC last year in his senior year, does that mean he was recruited? Does that mean that any other kid that comes to JC from another school was recruited? Think about that long and hard before you answer.
I am just asking you to provide REAL proof to your statement and you cannot yet you continue to claim it as fact.
And once again I ask you, what does "approached" mean? Approached by whom? Unless you can provide some specific examples you have no credibility.
But in any case, I think you made the point of what has probably been the real reality. JC in the past probably didn't compete and wasn't on par with other schools (in particular Jefferson) so the kids that were good enough to go somewhere else did.
Glad to see it changing. And you are probably right, Jefferson will need to change with the times or they will be left behind.
SAT scores for JHS above state, national rates

Although its overall score was down this year, for at least the fourth consecutive year, Jefferson High School surpassed the state and national SAT scores, according to data released on Monday by the Georgia Department of Education.
For 2012, the school posted a total SAT average of 1,564. Nationally, the average for public schools was 1,477. Statewide, the average was 1,437 among public school students. Since at least 2009, JHS has posted a SAT average score above the state and national scores, although its 2012 score is below its 2011 average of 1,617.
Among other local schools, Jackson County Comprehensive High School improved its score this year. At JCCHS, students earned an average SAT score of 1,457 this year — compared to 1,441 last year.
Commerce High School’s average SAT score for 2012 is 1,391 — up from 1,345 last year. However, the school’s SAT score this year is still below the state and national averages.
East Jackson Comprehensive High School also didn’t surpass the state and national SAT averages. The school’s SAT average dropped from 1,416 last year, to 1,386 this year.
According to the Georgia Department of Education, the state had the seventh highest participation rate in the U.S. for students taking the SAT. This year, 81 percent of Georgia students took the exam. States with higher participation rates typically see lower average scores on the SAT and often see dips when the number of students taking the exam increases.
Nationally, SAT scores among public school students dropped slightly from 1,483 last year to 1,477 this year.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s SAT scores among public school students rose slightly from 1,431 last year to 1,437 this year. For all students — including private school students — the state’s average SAT score was 1,452, a seven point increase from 2011.
The SAT is a college entrance exam that is developed, administered and scored by the College Board. It has three sections — critical reading, math and writing — each worth 800 points, for a highest possible score of 2,400.
