In many discussions with BCA athletic director Mark Barth, the Knight football program —and athletic program in general — seems to be on firm ground. In many ways, I can relate to Barth because our paper is still a relatively new project. We are closing in on completing our fourth year of publishing and like anything with a “new” tag on it, there have been some rough bumps in the road.
Barth provides the overall leadership for the school’s athletic program. He has hired good coaches and is probably looking to add a few more before all is said and done.
The school’s baseball program enjoyed an unprecedented level of success this past spring in reaching the state semifinals. Football, however, is a different creature. It takes time, it takes depth and it takes a little patience.
Head coach Don Garmon has been with the football program at the school since it was truly in its infancy stage, competing in local recreation leagues.
The addition of offensive coordinator Lance Fendley will certainly pay dividends in the long run. Fendley has coached at the collegiate level and brings a wealth of knowledge concerning the offensive side of the football.
Nick Pou has brought the same work ethic and enthusiasm to the football program that he used in baseball this spring. Handling the defensive side of the football, Pou seems ready to take the field himself and make a tackle if necessary.
BCA also competes on the middle school level in football, something which is necessary to build future programs.
Quality coaches are important, of course, but the Knights already have some talent on the field. Quarterback Chandler Garmon is a strong player. I’m sure BCA coaches wish the senior had more seasons after this one.
Matt Masters and Jared Martin certainly have the skills necessary to succeed.
With 2012 being the first season of full varsity play for the Knights, there will continue to be some potholes which need to be avoided. Yet, the upcoming schedule will present opportunities for success. Garmon said he wants the team to qualify for the state playoffs this season in order to get a taste of what that part of football is like.
Step by step the Knights are building to football glory.
