The Gainesville High School Red Elephants were as good as advertised Friday night when they rolled through W. Clair Harris Stadium and recorded a 69-0 victory against Winder-Barrow High School in the season opener for both schools.
Gainesville, who moved up to No. 7 in the most recent Class AAAAA poll, took early control and never looked back against the Bulldoggs, who continue to try and snap a losing streak which dates back to the 2009 season.
All-State quarterback DeShaun Watson fired a 51-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Lackey less than a minute into the contest as a sign of things to come Friday night. Watson connected for another scoring strike approximately three minutes later.
The Bulldogg defense made a goal line stand on the next series as Bradyn Randall recovered a fumble in the end zone.
That stop proved to be the lone highlight, especially in the first half, as Gainesville’s Watson threw seven touchdown passes for a 62-0 lead.
In the first half alone, Watson was 16-of-16 in pass attempts for 331 yards in addition to 41 yards on the ground with another score. Watson, who is only a junior in 2012, has made a verbal committment to play collegiately for the Clemson Tigers. He finished a perfect 18-of-18 on pass attempts.
The game took a toll not only on the scoreboard for WBHS, but in the injury department. Bulldogg Juan Lozana suffered an elbow injury and did not return. The injury situation concerns Bulldogg coach David Wagner as his team makes the trek to Salem High School in Conyers this Friday.
“We have some players competing at the varsity level that we didn’t think would be at this level at this point,” Wagner said. “That makes it extremely tough in this region. We need to heal up.”
The final score of the game came on a 24-yard touchdown pass by Gainesville back-up quarterback Mikey Gonzalez to Chastin Newman. The Red Elephant coaches dialed back their offensive attack in the third and fourth quarters, putting just seven more points on the board.
The Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs will look to get in the win column this Friday when they venture to Salem High School. The Seminoles opened 8-AAAAA play last week falling to county rival Heritage, another Top 10 school. Kickoff Friday in Conyers is set for 7:30 p.m.
How much better was the team befor Grant and Darby? If you want to get rid if the principal because of the football record than that shows why Barrow County Schools will never compare to surrounding systems.
I'll be glad to meet you at the 50 at W. Clair Harris Stadium and take your head off the way I used to do those two pretty boys when they suited up. Remember one day one at practice I about knocked Grant cold and told him to keep his ass down. Coach Berry was always telling me to dial it down a notch in practice. Told him I was at 100 percent at all times.
Just wondering!
So knowing this, do you care? Or is there only one sport that matters? Do the kids who work hard on and off the field/court/track/etc. to play other sports matter a little less? Move past your football obsession. Or better yet, show up at 2:48 p.m., when school is released each day, to volunteer if you feel like you have something to offer. I assure you, in a year where COACHES are forced to drive THEIR OWN BUSES, you may just be welcomed.
As for these administrators and coaches; no one wants to see a win more than they. Not for themselves, but for those boys. They love those players and sacrifice more than you realize to coach the kids of this community. Their families sacrifice as well. When is the last time any of you made that kind of commitment to another child or to your community?
I can no longer sit in the stands and read these comments and remain silent. I agree with the post above...until you are ready to put on the uniform or wear the coaches uniform and show up then sit down and take a good long look at who you are really criticizing. These players are reading these posts and you are just one more person in a long line trying to tell them they are not good enough. Well, I say enough. I am incredibly proud of my GG Doggs and will continue to shout for them every week regardless of what the scoreboard says.
Go Doggs!!!!
