It’s still early, of course, but class has been in session for a couple of weeks for the 2012 high school football season.
Locally, we’ve seen some good and not so good, as will always be the case when you have three programs competing at the varsity level.
Some of the good:
The Apalachee High School football team showed promise in its first two games, but coaches and players were disappointed in Friday’s setback to Class AA Greater Atlanta Christian.
Eric Tanner and Zay Henry have performed up to a high level along with Johnny Thompson, who is bound for Purdue following his career with the Wildcats.
Quarterback Clint Ashe continues to play well directing coordinator Joel Miller’s offense at AHS.
Now in their bye week, the Wildcats are preparing for a strong Region 8-AAAAA opener against Gainesville on the road Sept. 21.
The Bethlehem Christian Academy football team is competing in its first full season of varsity play and that alone makes it an exciting time for the program.
The Knights just missed their first victory of the season Friday in Macon against Covenant Academy. As this program continues to grow, BCA will become a gridiron contender in the GISA. Long-term plans are for an on-campus stadium and full size practice facility.
The Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs, despite their 0-2 start, have several players who are enjoying standout seasons early in 2012. Al Schotter, Christian Hodge, Devin Nash, CC Green, Chandon Sullivan, Cole Baggett, Bradyn Randall, Jeremy Ramsey and Tyree Tanner have all been impressive in the team’s first two games. Their positive attitude is to be applauded despite the team’s rough beginning.
Some of the bad:
The losing streak continues for Winder-Barrow and a daunting Region 8-AAAAA schedule awaits, including a home game with Gainesville this week.
A victory would go a long way for the Bulldogg players and coaches as they have worked extremely hard to be successful. The remainder of the schedule doesn’t present any easy wins, however.
