JEFFERSON’s pitching and defense have been well on display as of late as the Dragons have picked up three straight shutout wins in region play.
This past Tuesday was no exception as Morgan McKinney tossed a two-hitter and Jefferson (8-11, 4-1) committed no errors behind her in the Dragons’ 1-0 win over visiting Washington-Wilkes.
Coach Melissa Mullis doesn’t want to have to lean that heavily on the pitching and defense though.
“Too much defense and not enough offense on our part,” Mullis said.
Jefferson scored its only run in the bottom of the first when Lindsay Miles scored off an error. The Dragons also managed just two hits — one from Miles, the other from Jordan Philips.
“We’ve been struggling offensively to hit these region pitchers that are not dominant,” Mullis said. “But they are dominating us.”
McKinney ended up throwing all seven innings, surrendering the two hits and five strikeouts.
Mullis said she did want to give props to her pitcher for another solid outing.
“She’s really come along from her injury,” Mullis said. “She’s thrown some really great games.”
Jefferson moves on to a game with Union County Thursday (that won’t count in the region standings) and a five-game tournament at North Hall this weekend.
