Monroe Area runs by Winder-Barrow

It was a night for offensive records for the Canes. Quarterback Stanton Truitt had a school record 94-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. It would be just one of several big plays for Monroe Area, who was on the winning side of a lopsided game for the second week in a row.

WBHS took the first possession of the game and started at its own 20-yard line. After gaining a first down, the Bulldoggs were forced to punt on a fourth and eight from their own 34.

Monroe Area began its opening drive at the 26. Cole Baggett made a backfield tackle on second down forcing the Canes into a third and 16. However, Michael Gallup would take a throw from Truitt and race 80 yards for the first points of the night.

An interception by Monroe’s John Callihan stopped the second WBHS drive. The Canes would then find the endzone again on a 3-yard run by Junior Reed.

On the ensuing kickoff, a WBHS receiver stepped out of bounds at the 1-yard line. The Bulldogg offense was unable to get the football out of the endzone on the first play of the series, allowing the Monroe Area defense to record a safety and a 16-0 lead.

Things would only get worse for WBHS as the host Canes scored again on a 40-yard by Kwan Brooks with 2:45 still remaining in the first quarter. A fumble recovery would lead to another first-quarter score by Monroe Area as Demek Kemp caught a nine-yard pass from Truitt.

The Canes added a punt return for a score on a 65-yard run back by T.J. Sigmund with 10:34 left in the first half. WBHS was unable to close the floodgate as the Bulldoggs would trail 51-0 by halftime.

After Monroe Area took a 58-0 lead in the second half, the WBHS offense put two touchdowns on the board. The first game on a 1-yard run by Audre Scott. Al Schotter, who rushed for 20 yards on six carries, added the second score on a two-yard run.

For the first two games of 2012, Bulldogg quarterback Christian Hodge is 7-of-18 for 103 yards. He has connected with Chandon Sullivan four times for 92 yards. Brandon Hayes, Chadd Platt and Schotter all have one reception each. Sullivan is the team’s leading rusher with 84 yards on 16 carries. Hodge had rushed for 70 yards on 17 attempts while directing the triple option. Cole Baggett had compiled 50 yards on the ground while Devin Nash had 44 yards on 14 attempts in two games.

“We’ll move on from this, but there were some individual bright spots,” Wagner said. “We have to keep working because it’s not going to get any easier and that begins next Friday when Gainesville comes into town.”

The remainder of the regular season schedule will be against Region 8-AAAAA opponents. In previous seasons, the Bulldoggs had played a straight, 10-game region schedule, however, two non-region opponents were on the slate this fall. WBHS only has four home games in 2012, but will see that number increase to six next fall.
