BRIDGES: Welcome back high school football

Barrow Journal sports editor Chris Bridges made these observations as the start of the 2012 high school football season arrived Friday night.

•5:45 p.m.: There is already plenty of activity at Panther Stadium as the Winder-Barrow High School and Jackson County Comprehensive High School football teams prepare for the 2012 season opener. Concessions are being prepared. The playing surface at Panther Stadium features a lush green playing appearance highlighted with white, red and black paint. The stadium bleachers, located on the home side only, reach two levels high. The blue sky behind the stadium seats makes for a scenic backdrop dotted with a few, small white clouds. A song by The Rolling Stones plays over the loud speakers.

•5:53 p.m.: WBHS student managers arrive on the visitor’s sideline with water coolers. Bulldogg assistant coaches bring headsets and other equipment to be used later that night.

•5:56 p.m.: WBHS head coach David Wagner is observed overlooking the playing surface from a hill above the right end zone.

•6:12 p.m.: The first JCCHS football players take the field for pre-game warmups.

•6:26 p.m.: Several minutes later, the first WBHS players take the field for pre-game warmups.

•6:46 p.m.: The heat of the late afternoon is enough for Bulldogg players to be given a water break during pre-game warmups.

•7:02 p.m.: Wagner meets with JCCHS head coach Benji Harrison at midfield, a custom for football coaches prior to games on Friday night.

•7:07 p.m.: WBHS continues pre-game warmups.

•7:17 p.m.: Bulldogg players complete pre-game drills.

•7:20 p.m.: The National Anthem is performed. The JCCHS JROTC makes the presentation of colors.

•7:23 p.m.: WBHS captains Austin Stewart, Tyree Tanner, Chad Platt and Al Schotter walk to midfield.
•7:26 p.m.: JCCHS wins the toss and elects to receive.

•7:27: The two teams make their way onto the field as AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” plays.

•7:30 p.m.: Kickoff. The 2012 season has begun.
