The Commerce Tigers utilized an unstoppable rushing attack to end Jefferson’s five-year winning streak in this rivalry series.
Commerce (1-0) wasted no time, as they marched the ball down the field in the opening drive of the game. Fullback Jamal Browner forced his way into the in zone to put the Tigers up 7-0 early in the first quarter.
The Dragons (0-1) quickly answered back with a score of their own,
sending the two teams into the locker room with a score of 7-7 at the half.
On Commerce’s first possession of the second half, the Tigers started deep in their own territory. After only four plays, halfback Terrick Ramsey broke an 81-yard run to score another Tiger touchdown.
The Tiger defense shut down the Dragons on their next possession, forcing Jefferson to turn the ball over on downs.
Browner would go on to score another rushing touchdown with 3:28 to go in the game, effectively securing a Tiger victory.
Commerce head coach Marvin Justice commended his players and coaching staff on the win.
“I’m extremely proud of all our kids,” said Justice. “They played with one hundred percent heart and our coaching staff made great calls. This is a victory for the Commerce community.”
Senior Tiger Micah Eason commented on breaking the Tigers five-year losing streak to Jefferson, “I’ve been wanting this for a long time and I know the rest of the team has too,” he said. “It’s the greatest feeling in the world.”
The Tigers will travel to East Jackson next Friday to take on the Eagles (0-1), who fell 46-30 to Banks County tonight.
