The 7-AAA Banks County High School Leopards will host 8-AAA East Jackson High School this week in the home opener of the 2012 football season. A non region game but a big test for the Leopards as they have had trouble against the Eagles in the past.
Coach Brian Smith had an overall record last year of 3-7 and a region record of 1-5. One of those three wins was against Banks County. Their last winning season came in 2009 with an overall record of 10-2 and a region record of 8-1. The loss came from cross town rival Jefferson at the end of the season.
The Leopards on the other hand had a great season last year under Head Coach Philip Jones. BCHS overall record was 7-4, region 4-1 and were sub region champions. Their two losses from the regular season were to East Jackson, 7-35 and East Hall, 17-34. The Leopards took on powerhouse North Oconee for the region title and took a loss 0-41, but landed a home game in the first round of the state playoffs and took a loss to Adairsville, 3-21.
The whole team has been working on speed and agility all summer. Coach Siegmund has noted many players gaining in these areas of expertise. The hope is all the members can contribute to a winning season for the Leopards.
East Jackson will return 16 Seniors to the team as the Eagles prepare to take the field at BCHS this Friday Night under the lights.
