THERE will be more than one Bost playing college tennis this year.
Months after her brother, Zach, signed with Appalachian State, Taylor Bost has inked with another school in North Carolina — Lees-McRae.
“I’m excited,” Bost said. “It will be a change, but I’m excited.”
Lees-McRae, a 900-student private school located in the mountainous region of North Carolina, competes in NCAA Division II.
“I like that it’s small,” said Bost, who was scheduled to report to the campus this past Saturday. “You get a lot of academic attention.”
The decision to attend Lees-McRae was somewhat last-minute.
Bost had planned to attend Georgia Southern until Lees-McRae came into the picture late. Lees-McRae was the only one to offer Bost a tennis scholarship.
“I really never thought about playing college tennis until I got the offer,” Bost said.
Bost thinks she’ ll play both singles — perhaps in the no. 3 or 4 spot — and doubles this coming year for Lees-McRae.
Bost will be attending school and playing tennis very close to her brother. Lees-McRae, located in Banner Elk, N.C, is just 18 miles from Boone, where Zach will be attending Appalachian State.
With a pair of siblings both earning tennis scholarships, the sport is obviously a big part of the Bost household.
“Our whole family has played forever,” Bost said. “We’re all into it, so it’s a big family thing.”
Bost played no. 1 singles for coach Mike Paul’s Jefferson team and was a dependable singles player throughout her career.
“Taylor did a great job for us the two years I’ve been the head coach,” Paul said. “I think she’s only lost a handful of matches. Senior year, she was one of the leaders on our team. I can’t be more happy for her.”
Paul said that both Bosts earning college scholarships is certainly big for the program.
“Hopefully, our younger kids will see that there’s an opportunity in front of them,” Paul said. “Even with Taylor signing late, you never give up on a dream. It can happen anytime.”
