That task was taken care of two weeks ago in Monroe. Next on the list was a shot at winning the Southern Regionals in Ft. Myers Florida. But it was not in the cards for the Georgia champions as Madison County dropped three in a row, ending its post-season play. Madison County fell in extra innings 11-10 to North Carolina on Saturday, lost to Florida on Sunday 18-1 and dropped their final game on Tuesday 5-4 to Polk City (Florida).
Madison County staged a threat late in the game with Polk City by posting three runs in their final at bat, but the rally fell one run short.
On Saturday, the Madison County girls opened regional tournament action by suffering their first post-season loss. Madison County faced North Carolina in a wild shoot-out, but ended up on the short end of an 11-10 extra inning loss. The Madison girls jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings of play and added a third run in the third frame on a Tatum Harris home run. North Carolina answered with five quick runs in the home half of the third inning to take the lead 5-3. North Carolina extended their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Madison County then closed the margin to 8-5 in the top of the sixth inning and later tied the contest at 8-8 in the top of the seventh. Then the rains came.
The game was delayed for a short time due to the south Florida storm but when play resumed, so did Madison County’s offense. The Georgia State Champions pushed across two more runs in the seventh to retake the lead 10-8. North Carolina fought back to tie the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh and eventually won the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Kayla Argo and KC Wade led Madison County’s offense with three hits each followed by two hits from Elizabeth Stoyle, Brianna Morgan, and Mallory Rogers. Dani Lukas and Tatum Harris both added a hit each. Argo finished the night with two RBIs. Lukas, Tatum Harris, and Kayla Argo shared the pitching duties for Madison County.
On Sunday, Madison County faced a tough Florida (Cape Coral) team but failed to come out on top as Florida struck early and often on the way to an 18-1 win. Madison County’s lone run came late in the contest. Florida entered the game fresh on a 20-2 win over host team Polk City Florida on Saturday.
