All in all, the Apalachee High School summer baseball team is doing just fine for the month of June.
That was the assessment of coach Mike Cavey following the squad’s recent venture in the Brookwood Mid-Summer Classic which began last Friday and continued through Sunday.
“We’re going well,” Cavey said. “We faced some good pitching this weekend, but overall we are making strides for next season. I am pleased with what we have accomplished.”
On the field, the Wildcats opened the Mid-Summer Classic with a 9-6 loss to Evans in a game AHS “should have won,” Cavey said.
The team then fell to Grayson 8-6 Saturday before defeating North Hall 7-4 Sunday. AHS then played George Walton Academy, who advanced to the Class A semifinals this spring, to a scoreless, seven inning tie.
Clint Ashe, Tyler Adams and Tyler Starnes were among the Wildcat players who saw quality time on the pitcher’s mound.
AHS will travel to Columbus later this week to compete in four games.
The Wildcats, who plan to leave early Friday morning, will play Brookstone at 11:15 that morning before traveling to Columbus State for an afternoon contest at 3:45 p.m.
Two additional games are on the slate for Saturday.
“It will be another chance for us to see good opposition,” Cavey said. “That’s really what the summer’s all about. You want to win, but you know that summer is about learning and allowing your younger players a chance to get their feet wet in varsity play. I have been pleased with everything the players have done this month.”
