The Banks County High School cross country teams made a statement recently about how far their respective programs have advanced in recent seasons with first-place showings at Habersham Central High School.
The BCHS Leopards were first with 32 points followed by Johnson High School, Habersham Central, Hart County and Trinity.
Viet Phang turned in a personal best time of 21:08 as did Jared Clark in 25:00.
Jorge Diaz was the top runner for the BCHS boys in 18:29 followed by Ivan Diaz (18:53), Keiffer Hellmeister (20:07), Avery Chastain (20:08), Nathan Holloway (20:33), Simon Hurtado (20:38) and Trey Martin (20:51).
Chastain’s time was also a personal best.

BCHS teams take first at recent Habersham meet
The BCHS Lady Leopards also captured first place outdistancing Habersham, Hart County, Johnson and Trinity.
Vanessa Hurtado was the top Lady Leopard in 23:51 followed by Amy Sims in 24:28. Maggie McCoy ran a personal best of 24:51 followed by Sarah Wolf in 25:17. Tiffany Sims finished the course in 25:35.
Jessica Wagoner also contributed to the first-place finish with a time of 27:56 while Ashley McCoy ran the course in 28:00.
“Both teams are doing a great job at this point in the season,” BCHS cross country coach Kelly McDuffie said.
During the first home meet of the season last week, the BCHS boys earned another win against Jackson County and Commerce.
Jorge Diaz paced the Leopards in 22:09 followed by Ivan Diaz in 22:41. Hellmeister finished the tough BCHS course in 23:54 followed by Holloway in 23:54 and Chastain in 24:41.
“Our course is very hard and has consistently added approximately four minutes to the normal times posted by runners,” McDuffie said.
Viet Pham ran a 25:01 followed by Simon Hurtado in 25:16.
The Lady Leopards were second at the home meet and were led by Vanessa Hurtado in 29:01. Sims ran a 30:03 followed by Wolf in 30:27 and McCoy in 31:04.
Jessica Grisham had a time of 34:57 while Kayla Mabry ran a 35:03. Katrina Morris turned in a time of 35:52.
McDuffie said McCoy, a freshman and Wolf, a senior, are both showing leadership this season.
“Maggie has secured a spot on the varsity after running middle school last year,” the coach said. “She has not reached her potential. We ae excited to see what she really can do.”
Wolf, a senior, has stepped up her performance this fall, the coach said.
“She is providing senior leadership and doing a great job,” McDuffie said. “If she continues to push herself she will have her best year ever. She has experienced the trip to the state meet and really wants to return and compete at state again.”
