Demeritte to compete for Gamecocks

Travis Demeritte has made it known he will be playing for the top college baseball program in the country.

The rising senior at Winder-Barrow High School announced last week via his Twitter account that he will play for the South Carolina Gamecocks after his career with the Diamond Doggs is complete.

Several other Southeastern Conference schools were also vying for Demeritte’s skills on the diamond.

Demeritte made his decision partly on the recent Major League Baseball draft. With several Gamecock players being taken, the WBHS standout felt the school was the right one for him.

Demeritte batted .405 this past spring with 29 RBI. His action on the pitcher’s mound was limited early due to injury, but he still had a 1.09 earned run average in 32 innings of work with 65 strikeouts. He has been clocked throwing 91 miles per hour.

Demeritte may still have a choice to make in 2013. He is currently listed as No. 22 in the 2013 ESPN HS 60, which compiles the top high school players in the country. WBHS coach Brian Smith said South Carolina would use Demeritte both as a pitcher and position player.
