After establishing a season record for number of victories in 2012, the Apalachee High School summer baseball team is looking to keep the momentum going this summer.
The Diamond Cats began their summer league play going 3-2 in the Mizuno National Showcase in Hoover, Ala. AHS pushed three-time AAAAA state champion Spanish Fort to a 9-8 contest.
Coach Mike Cavey’s team then defeated Pinson Valley, another playoff team, 3-0. After falling to a Hoover team 6-0, the Wildcats defeated Sheffield 11-3 and Lincoln County (Tenn.) 4-3.
AHS will now compete in a tournament hosted by North Oconee County High School.
The Wildcats will play Oconee County and White County Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. before playing at North Oconee High School Saturday for games against Jefferson (10 a.m.) and Parkview
(3 p.m.)
The summer will allow the Wildcats to see plenty of action on the diamond as they are also scheduled to compete in a tournament hosted by Brookwood High School and a tournament at Columbus State University. After a successful 2012 season, the Apalachee High School baseball team lost two seniors to graduation. The team will have seven rising seniors return next spring as the Wildcats hope to qualify for the postseason for the first time in program history.
“We’re getting there,” Cavey said recently. “It’s a process and we feel we made important strides this spring. Hopefully, we can continue improving this summer and we can use what we learn when we take the field again next spring. Summer is an important time for a high school baseball program and I hope our players will take the time we have on the field serious.”
AHS will compete in Region 8-AAAAA for at least the next two seasons under the new alignments from the Georgia High School Association.
