The Madison County 4-H shotgun team competed in the 2012 Northeast District 4-H Shotgun Match and State Qualification Event Saturday, April 17, at the Elbert County Gun Club.
The teams from Madison County competed against over 30 individuals at the area contest. Thirteen Madison County students participated in the event.
Students in seventh and eighth grade competed in the Junior division and high school students competed in the Senior division. Members competing in the Junior division included: Jaxson Andrews, Tyler Cape, Sam Chandler, Dyson Christian, Aaron Hallberg, Justin Johnson, Mitchell McCarty, Bradley Pass and Chandler Perry.
Senior division participants included: Gabe Doster, Clint Holeman, Tyler Kyle and Trevor Tate. To advance to the state match May 12 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center, the team practiced bi-monthly for the regular School year and weekly for the past two months. All thirteen members advanced to the state competition Junior 4-H members had to break at least 16 of 25 targets.
The Madison County Junior Team placed eighth overall at the State Target Sports Weekend for Modified Trap held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton.
The team scored a total of with several of the team shooting perfect scores. Pass went on to be named as the eighth High Individual out of all the students at the contest.
Senior 4-H members had to break 20 of 25 targets. At the state contest, all four Senior team members did an excellent job as well, 4-H leaders said. The Georgia 4-H Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education Program (S.A.F.E.) is sponsored by The Georgia 4-H Foundation.
“The Madison County program has been going strong for over 10 years,” 4-H leaders said. “Many of the skills that they have acquired have come from excellent coaching.”
The shotgun team is volunteer lead by head coach Derek Doster, and assistant coaches Lane Andrews and Lucas Holeman.
“These individuals donate countless hours of their time for the enrichment of our youth and should be commended for their work,” said 4-H leaders.
