JEFFERSON’S Iniki Allen has earned a cheerleading scholarship to Big 12 school Oklahoma State after impressing coaches in a May tryout.
Allen, who had a signing ceremony Thursday, explained how it all happened.
“I actually saw them at college nationals in Daytona,” Allen said. “I just told my coach that I was interested. We called them. I went and tried out. (There were) about 200 people there.”
Allen tried out at the beginning of the month. The trip allowed her to get a feel for the Stillwater, Okla. campus — one that’s 915 miles away from Jefferson High School.
“It was a beautiful campus,” Allen said. “Everyone on the team is really nice. They were really friendly. You could tell they were all family-oriented. It was really comfortable. They made it fun and very stress-free as far as tryouts went.”
This is the first time in recent memory that a Jefferson student has signed a cheerleading scholarship.
Allen said she’s happy to have that distinction.
“Really good,” she said. “It feels amazing.”
