Tigers To Face Spartans In Region Contest

Commerce dropped another game in the 2008 season, this time to Lincoln County, 35-6, leaving the Tigers with a 1-3 record going into this Friday’s region game against undefeated Athens Academy.

Athens Academy has defeated Commerce in five of the last seven match-ups. The last time the Tigers defeated the Spartans was in 2005, 14-6. That is not to say Commerce has rolled over just yet. In the 2006 game, Commerce fell by one point 10-9 and by three points in 2007, 27-24.

Friday night offers Commerce a chance to jump back into the fire as the Tigers travel to Athens to face the Spartans at 7:30 p.m.

Lincoln County
Friday night put a dampener on the Tigers and not just from the drizzling rain. Lincoln County was by far favored to win the game, but diehard fans probably expected more than the single touchdown in the first quarter.

By the Numbers
Commerce rushed for 204 yards averaging 3.8 yards on 53 attempts and completed only one of two pass attempts. The Tiger offense gained 232 yards on 55 plays compared to Lincoln’s 450 yards on 47.

Chase Bowen kept the Tigers from being blanked Friday night scoring on a 20-yard rush to tie the Red Devils 6-6 in the first quarter. Bowen picked up 101 yards on 16 attempts for the game. Jon Cash averaged 5.6 yards on seven attempts picking up a total of 39 yards, while Phillip Edwards rushed for 39 yards on 16 attempts. Jovan Womack had the third longest rush for Commerce at 13 yards picking up a total of 18 yards on eight attempts.

Commerce was late in getting an arm into the game. Edwards attempted two passes and the one completion to Deon Osborne gained 28 yards for the Tigers in the fourth quarter.

Jesse Savage had an interception on defense. Casey Drinkard totaled the most tackles, seven, including five assists, followed by Doug Maloch with six, including four assists, and Terrance Martin totaling five tying with Josh Streetman, each making four solo tackles.
