THE JACKSON County girls' soccer team shutout Pierce County 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in the state tournament to advance to the Class AA Elite Eight.
The Lady Panthers, who are playing in the state tournament for the first time in program history, will play at Buford Saturday at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Buford is the no. 3 seed out of Region 6-AA and has beaten its competition in the state tournament by a combined score of 17-0. The Lady Wolves routed Callaway 10-0 in the first round and then beat Dublin 7-0 in the second round.
Jackson County, which was the no. 4 seed out of Region 8-AA, opened with a 2-1 victory over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on May 4 before beating Pierce County.
Jackson County is one of three Region 8-AA teams advancing to the Elite Eight. The others are Dawson County and North Oconee.
