DANNI Cunningham was one of Jackson County’s top rebounding and scoring threats this past season. Now, she hopes to translate that success to the junior college level.
The Lady Panther post player has signed with Andrew College in Cuthbert. Jackson County held a signing ceremony for Cunningham Monday at the media center, with members of the Andrew College athletic department on-hand.
“We’re obviously excited to have Danni as a part of our program coming up this fall,” Andrew College assistant coach Blake Coty told the gathering.
Coty added that Cunningham is the “exact kind of student athlete we want at Andrews College.”
“She’s going to help us take our program to a whole different level, not only from a competitive standpoint, but a student standpoint as well,” Coty said.
Cunningham pointed to both academic and athletic factors in her decision to choose Andrew College. She also had offers from Brenau, West Greenville and Oglethorpe.
“I liked how it was small and it would be easy for me to obtain my Hope GPA and how it would give me a chance to play on the team,” Cunningham said.
Cunningham said much of her preparation time for college basketball will be spent on improving her dribbling and shooting.
Jackson County coach John Hawley, speaking to those on hand at the gathering, expressed pride in Cunningham’s growth as a player.
“More than anything else, we’re just glad in how you believed in yourself,” Hawley said to Cunningham. “You’ve come so far, last year to this year, because you challenged yourself and because of that and because you believed in yourself, you have this great opportunity right now in front of you.”
