A host of Commerce High School track and field athletes qualified for the state finals during the inaugural East Sectional Meet held at the University of Georgia on Saturday.
The boy’s 4x100 relay team headlined the group, with a time (43.55) less than a second behind the top qualifying team from Hancock Central High School in Sparta.
Quay Little, Jamir Walton, D. Ramsey and Terrick Ramsey will compete in the preliminary heat for the relay at noon on Friday, May 11 at Jefferson’s Memorial Stadium.
Coach Pam Canup said the group of juniors should be in prime position to move into the final heat. She noted only three teams that qualified within the 42-second mark, with another five or so in Commerce’s 43-second range.
“That could be the top eight (teams) in the finals,” she said. “This group of boys who are running the relays, each year they seem to get a little bit better.”
Two of the athletes on the relay team will also compete in the triple and long jump events. D. Ramsey and Walton finished in the top eight, with jumps good enough to advance them to the field event finals, which are scheduled on Thursday, May 10 in Jefferson.
Both performed better in the long jump, with Ramsey qualifying third with his 20-feet, 6-1.4 jump and Walton breaking 20-feet as well and finishing fifth in the sectional meet.
They will be joined in the field event finals by teammates Thomas McMillan, who qualified in the high jump (5-10) and Micah Eason (46-11.75) in the shot put.
The girls’ team also produced three finalists last Saturday with 100-meter hurdler Zoey Forrester leading the way with her fourth-place qualifying time of (17.70). Sophomore high jumper Lily Mather (4-10) qualified for the state finals for the second year in a row.
And Cameron Hawkins completes the roster in the triple jump, an event she qualified for with after leaping 31 feet, 10-1/4 inches.
The Lady Tigers will compete at Albany’s Hugh Mills Stadium beginning Thursday with the preliminary track events, followed by the field events on Friday and race finals on Saturday.
