JEFFERSON’S Carson Newman threw a 141-2 in the discus Thursday to win the region title and secure his spot to the state sectionals.
His throw bettered the field by eight feet.

Three other Dragons will join Jefferson at the state sectionals. The list includes defending Class AA pole vault champion Mason Hamrick, who finished second in 8-AA with a vault of 13-6.

Others qualifying were Josh Reid (fourth, 800 meters, 2:05.74) and James Howard (third, pole vault, 13 feet).

Jefferson finished sixth in 8-AA overall with 46 points.
