JEFFERSON scored five times in the fifth inning Friday night to pull away for a 10-2 victory over Banks County to win its best-of-three region playoff series with the Leopards.
The Dragons (13-9) clinched a state playoff berth with the victory and will advance to the region semifinals against North Oconee.
Jefferson starts its best-of-three series with the Titans Monday.
The visiting Dragons led 4-1 after four innings Friday but plated five runs to break the game open and take a 9-1 lead.
Tyler Cole went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs. Andy Nicolas was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Hanon Price also drove home two runs, going 1-for-2 with a double.
Jefferson’s no. 3 starter, Jacob Page, threw six innings for the win. He surrendered five hits, two runs (both earned) and one walk while striking out four. Matt Bowen closed the game out, throwing a shutout inning in the seventh.
The Dragons, which won the series opener 6-0 yesterday and then lost game two 1-0, will return to the state playoffs after missing out on the Class AA postseason last year. But what seed Jefferson will take into state still has to be determined.
The Dragons region semifinals opponent is a North Oconee team that’s ranked no. 7 in the state. The two teams split during the regular season.
