The Commerce High School boys’ and girls’ track teams prepared this week for the final legs of their competitive seasons.
The Tigers travel to Athens Academy on Thursday for the Region 8-A meet, which starts at noon and continues through 7:30 p.m. Field events are first, followed by preliminary track heats and the 1600-meter finals. Awards for field events will be given out at 7 p.m.
The meet continues at 11 a.m. Saturday, with track event finals scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Awards will cap the meet at 1:45 p.m.
Several Commerce athletes still are achieving their best times, with the teams’ last regular-season meet at Athens Academy on April 5 an indication the groups are progressing to top form, coach Pam Canup said.
“Both the short relay teams ran the best they had all year,” she said. “That’s what we want. Good things are happening.”
Overall, the Commerce boys finished first out of the four teams that participated in the last meet. The Commerce girls placed second, behind Athens Academy.
The teams’ leaders, junior Micah Eason and senior Jamie O’Hara, agreed the teams are ready.
