The Apalachee High School baseball team had been red hot this season but ran into somewhat of a roadblock Monday afternoon when they ventured to Danielsville to face Madison County.
The Wildcats fell 6-0 and now stand at 6-2 overall for 2012.
“We couldn’t get anything going offensively,” AHS coach Mike Cavey said. “We would get runners on and then not get the key hits.”
Madison County’s Brock Turner, who has been clocked in the 80s, had eight strikeouts while scattering five hits and two walks.
Tyler Starnes got the start for the Wildcats but did not have his best outing Monday. Starnes was pulled after 2.1 innings with Chance Rodriguez being brought in.
“Chance gave up a solo homer in the sixth but it didn’t matter because we didn’t score a run,” Cavey said.
AHS and Madison County were scheduled to meet again Wednesday (today) on the Wildcats’ field.
“We have to go back to work in practice,” Cavey said. “That’s what we will do in order to be ready to face them again.”
Prior to Monday’s game at Madison County, the Wildcats defeated Salem 5-1 Friday.
Clint Ashe earned the win as the junior worked six innings striking out nine batters while allowing just two hits. Salem did not manage a basehit until the fifth inning.
Ashe did not allow a hit through four innings before the visiting Seminoles managed two singles in the top of the fifth which eventually led to their lone run of the day.
Mason Webb had a triple against Salem in the bottom of the first and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tony Salvaggio.
The Wildcats added their second run on a passed ball which allowed Eric Morgan to advance from third.
Chance Rodriguez picked up an RBI in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Austin Leazer.
Morgan added a two-run single in the sixth inning.
AHS wrapped up non-region play the day before with a 15-2 crushing of Berkmar. The Wildcats entered this week 6-1 overall.
