Madison Co. netters down four opponents
Madison County tennis teams rolled past four opponents in the past week, downing Habersham Central, Clarke Central, Apalachee and Winder.
The guys’ team defeated Winder 4-1 March 13, while the girls blanked Winder 5-0. The boys improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the sub-region, while the girls are 5-2 and 4-1.
“This wrapped up our first go round of sub-region play,” said Madison County head coach Keith Strickland. “We completed this round where we thought we would be. The boys are at the top of the sub-region and the girls are second. Being 5-0 and 4-1 gives us the momentum as we head down the stretch. Our goal is to gain the number one seed for the region tournament.”
Madison County will hit the court again in the Granger Invitational Tournament March 16-17.
In the previous three showdowns, the guys won all three matches 5-0, while the girls downed Habersham 3-2, Clarke Central 4-1 and Apalachee 5-0.
Madison County head coach Keith Strickland said Tyler Terrell and Abby Thrasher “had very exciting matches” against Apalachee.
“Abby battled back to take the second set after losing the first and then battled back from 1-4 down in the third to win the next 5 games and take the set 6-4 and the match,” said Strickland. “Tyler battled back from 5-1 down in the second set, wining the next 6 games to take the set 7-5 and win in straight sets. All of the other boys and girls positions took charge and won in straight sets losing very few games.”
Despite the recent success, Strickland said his squad can still improve.
“We still have some areas to work on and improve on, especially our doubles teams,” said Strickland. “Even though we are winning, we still don’t look as aggressive as I would like and we’re not dominating our opponents like we need to. We need to work on the mental aspect of the game and stay focused on getting a quick start in each match and holding a lead.”
