Phillips, Kastner score two goals each to lead JCCHS girls
Jackson County (3-1) trounced Franklin County 5-1 Friday with two goals each from Katie Phillips and Gabbie Kastner.
Maddie Newton also scored. In addition to her pair of goals, Phillips recorded two assists. Sydney Baird and Brianna Manculich also had assists.
The lopsided win came after Jackson County drilled East Hall 5-0 last Tuesday. The Lady Panthers got two goals from Phillips (off assists from Rachel Pasko and Sydney Baird), Manculich (off an assist from Phillips), Allison Reilly and Baird.
Goalie Victoria Fontana recorded the shutout. Coach Joe Ridgway noted strong defensive performances from Reilly, Pasko and Kelsey Turner.
“I was very proud of the way we came together to get our first region win,” Ridgway said. “The girls are moving forward.”
JCCHS downed 4-1 by Franklin Co.
The Jackson County boys fell 4-1 to Franklin County Friday with Patrick Ventura supplying the lone Panther goal.
Jackson County coach Joseph Brubaker said the entire team was disappointed with the showing.
“We all know we have to cut down on the mistakes and play better if we want to accomplish the goals we believe we can achieve,” Brubaker said. “Everything is still out there.”
EJCHS boys post second shutout of the season
EAST JACKSON goalkeepers Luis Herrera and Nic Alvarado combined for a shutout as the Eagles blanked Union County 4-0 Monday.
Herrera played most of the game in goal, giving way to Alvarado in the last few minutes for the chance to play on the field.
Jake Pitcher, Austin Lumpkin, Luis Ponce and Cody Adams all scored for the Eagles.
“Union County lost almost all their starters from last year so I won’t let the result go to our boys’ heads,” East Jackson coach Chris Cooley said.
East Jackson’s junior varsity also collected a victory, beating Winder-Barrow.
Prior to Monday’s varsity win, the East Jackson boys tied Class AAAA Madison County 1-1 Friday, with the Eagles’ lone score coming from Jonathan Zarco off an assist from Adams about 20 minutes into the game. Madison County scored the equalizer 10 minutes later.
“In the second half we played a very solid — mainly a defensive game — though we had some good opportunities to score,” Cooley said.
Although both coaches agreed to play overtime and penalties, the referees left the stadium so the game ended in a tie.
The Eagles were coming off a 6-2 loss last Wednesday to Winder-Barrow.
Lumpkin scored East Jackson’s first goal off a header from a corner kick crossed in by Connor Kozlosky. Pitcher scored off an assist from Edwin Lopez. The teams were tied 2-2 but Winder-Barrow scored four goals in the last 15 minutes.
“It was a strange game, because we could have won but ended up losing 6-2,” Cooley said.
Minus several players, East Jackson girls lose
A SHORTHANDED East Jackson girls’ squad (2-2) fell 6-1 Monday at home against Union County.
Cassidy Steele supplied the lone goal. The Lady Eagles had to finish the game with just nine players due to two injuries and four others sitting out.
East Jackson was coming off a 2-0 win over Class AAAA Madison County Friday.
Skyler Cozzens and Hayleigh Smith provided the goals. The Lady Eagles lost 8-0 to Winder-Barrow two days before that.
JHS boys win 1-0 in subregion opener
JEFFERSON won its subregion opener Tuesday, beating Oglethorpe County 1-0 off a score from Kamon Johnson. Chandler Schlutow provided the assist.
Prior to opening subregion play, Jefferson (2-1, 1-0) took down a Class AA foe Friday, beating Winder-Barrow 2-0.
Bryan Thao and Chandler Schlutow both scored for the Dragons.
“Overall we played well, but the first 20 minutes were very good,” coach Jacob Marble said.
Lady Dragons win on penalty kicks
THE JEFFERSON girls (2-1, 1-0) beat Oglethorpe County 3-2 Tuesday, winning on penalty kicks in their subregion opener.
Camilla Hernandez and Hannah Pasko scored during regulation. Carolyn Carreno had an assist. Carreno, Hernandez and Taylor Cramsey made their penalty kicks. Goalie Lisa Phlomann blocked three penalty kicks to preserve the win. Coaches also noted the play of goalie Emma Pruitt.
Tennis
Jefferson-East Jackson matches rescheduled
MATCHES between Jefferson and East Jackson were rained out Tuesday and have been rescheduled for March 5 at Jefferson.
Jackson County’s matches with Elbert County were also washed out. No reschedule date has been announced.

EJCHS golfers drop opener
THE EAST Jackson boys fell 173-200 to Athens Christian last Wednesday in their season opener.
Nathan Crumley led the Eagles with a 41.
The East Jackson girls also opened their season last Wednesday, but Athens Christian didn’t field a full team. Melissa Spinelli led the Lady Eagles with a 53.
JCCHS boys beat Jefferson
THE JACKSON County boys’ golf team topped Jefferson 170-195 Monday at Traditions of Braselton Golf Club.
Thomas Whitley shot a 38 and York Delloyd finished with a 40 in the Panthers’ first nine-hole match of the season.
Jackson County opened the season two days earlier at the Coal Mountain Classic at Hampton Club, finishing 10th out of 16 teams.
“I was very happy with how we prepared, competed and finished,” coach Warren Standridge said. “It was a huge tourney with some very good teams.”
York Delloyd led the Panthers with an 85. Jackson was without Whitley who was playing in a junior tournament.
Jefferson girls beat Commerce for first win
THE JEFFERSON girls’ golf team (1-1) got into the win column with an abbreviated 99-103 win over Commerce Thursday.
The teams played just seven holes.
Hanna Chapman (40) and Anna Alexander (43) led Jefferson. Haley Chestnut fired a 39 for Commerce.

JEFFERSON lost by five strokes to rival Commerce, 136-141, Tuesday as the Dragons fell to 0-2 on the young season. The teams played just seven holes.
Daniel Kimmel (33), Blair Cain (34), Andrew Thompson (34) and Eli Griffin (40) led Jefferson. Dillon Young led Commerce with a 32.
