Baseball: Commerce avenges loss to Jefferson, wins 9-4

Scoring eight runs in the first two innings, Commerce beat Jefferson 9-4 Monday to avenge a loss to the Dragons (2-1) just four days earlier.

Jefferson’s Matt Bowen (1-1) took the loss, surrendering eight runs — five of which were earned — in one and two-thirds innings pitched.

The Tigers’ Robert Hayes pitched four innings to earn the win.

Commerce, which was limited to a single hit Thursday in a 5-0 loss to Jefferson, finished with seven hits against Dragon pitching as the Tigers split the series with the home win.

Jefferson, which managed just four hits, was led by Trent Sorrells, who went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.

The Dragons’ home game with Gainesville, originally slated for today (Wednesday) has been moved to Thursday at 5:55 p.m. to avoid a conflict with the state basketball tournament.
