With all the whoopla about New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, it got me to think, who are the best point guards in the league?
So I decided to make my own list of my top five point guards in the NBA, as of now. Remember, this list is my own opinion. Your list might be different, if so, feel free to comment on how absurd my list is.
So let’s jump right to it, here are my top five NBA point guards.
•No. 5: Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook is a very exciting point guard to watch. He does struggle with consistency problems, but when he is rolling it is a fun thing to watch.
He averages 22.6 points per game — which is higher than any other point guard on my list. But he only averages 5.4 assists per game.
Still, he is on the Thunder who have ad a great start to the season. With him and Durant on the same team they are poised to make a run for the playoffs.
•No. 4: Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics.
Rondo is by far the best facilitating point guard. He can run an offense with his eyes closed.
His passes are always on point and very precise and definitely the best passing point guard in the league. And while I am big on Rondo, I am still not totally sold on him.
And not in his passing game, because he is great in that aspect. But I would like to see Rondo become more of a scoring threat. I understand that with Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett that he does not need to score 25 points per game.
But still, I would like to see him become more of a threat offensively.
•No. 3: Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls.
I know what you are thinking. I am crazy for putting the defending league MVP at number three. But here is the thing, I love Rose but I simply believe there are two better point guards then him.
Plus, his game reminds me a lot of Allen Iverson. And even though it seems like Rose has so many threats on his team, it always feels like he’s the one doing all the scoring.
Still, Rose is a very good point guard.
•No. 2: Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers.
Some consider Paul to be the best pure point guard in the game, and they certainly have a good argument.
Paul has the total package. He distributes, scores, and plays defense. And he is not afraid to hit the big shot. He usually leads the league in steals and seems to always be near the top in assists. He is averaging 8.7 assists per game and 18.3 points per game since being moved to Lob City.
•No. 1: Deron Williams, New Jersey Nets.
If you didn’t think I was crazy earlier, you certainly do now. But before you email me calling me an idiot, hear me out about the league’s best point guard.
In my opinion, Williams is the best scoring point guard in the league while still bringing you great assist numbers. He averages 21.6 points per game and 8.3 assists per game. All this while playing for the New Jersey Nets.
And in case you haven’t noticed, he is practically playing alone. If you throw Williams on the Clippers, Bulls, Celtics or Thunder then you would truly see just how great of a point guard he is.
A few years ago the conversation was Paul vs. Williams for the best point guard in the league, it was a class of two. Well since then Paul has gone on to play with Blake Griffin while Williams is teaming up with Kris Humphries.
People forget about Deron because he isn’t on a competitive team. Let’s see what happens if Dwight Howard makes his move to New Jersey, maybe then everyone can give Williams the respect he deserves.
