Cozzens’ four goals spark EJCHS’s season-opening rout
SKYLAR Cozzens bombarded Banks County with four goals Feb. 14 to lead the East Jackson girls to a 10-0 win in their season opener.
The game ended early as the 10-goal mercy rule came into effect. East Jackson (1-0) returns to action today (Wednesday) at Winder-Barrow at 5:30 p.m.
The junior varsity girls won 5-1.
EJCHS gets two goals from Pitcher in 3-0 win
Jake Pitcher scored twice and Nicolas Alvarado scored on a strike from 30-yards out as East Jackson’s boys opened with a 3-0 over Banks County Feb. 14.
The junior varsity recorded a 5-0 win.
The Eagles (1-0) return to action today (Wednesday) at Winder-Barrow at 7 p.m.
Carreno’s hat-trick leads Jefferson to 6-0 win in opener
LED BY three goals from Carolyn Carreno, the Jefferson girls (1-0) opened with a shutout win over Athens Academy, 6-0, Feb. 13.
Stephanie Lamm, Hannah Pasko and Lisa Plohmann each added scores for Jefferson, which attempted 19 shots. Lamm also recorded an assist.
Goalies Amanda Flowers and Emma Pruitt each recorded three saves, while defensive players Amanda Brattain, Taylor Cramsey, Plohmann and Isabella Hisk kept the ball away from the goal.
Jefferson returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. at home against Winder-Barrow.
Dragons return to play Friday
THE JEFFERSON boys (0-1) return to play Friday against Winder-Barrow at 7 p.m. at home following a 1-0 loss in their opener to Athens Academy Feb. 13.
“Which is a great improvement from two years ago when we lost 9-0,” coach Jacob Marble said. “We had our opportunities to score but could not capitalize. The game help to point out some areas that we need to work on.”
JCCHS boys lose 6-2 to Stephens County
JACKSON County, minus four players, fell to Stephens County 6-2 Thursday. Three of the missing players were starters.
Patrick Ventura scored for the Panthers (1-1). Jackson County’s other goal came via an on-goal from Stephens County.
“We played well and just wore down as the second half progressed,” Jackson County coach Joseph Brubaker said. “Our youth and experience was exposed a bit as we had four varsity (players) not able to play in the game.”
The Panthers opened Feb. 13 with a 4-2 win over Social Circle behind two goals each from Phillip Burzo and Ventura.
Lady Panthers fall 4-1 to Stephens County
JACKSON COUNTY’S girls lost to Stephens County 4-1 Thursday with Kaitlyn Parker providing the lone score.
“Stephens County presented a very strong and physical team,” coach Joe Ridgway said. “The game was very intense with just a few opportunities on goal.”
The Lady Panthers (1-1) opened Feb. 13 with a 3-1 win over Social Circle. Parker, Sydney Baird and Gabbi Kastner all scored. Maddie Newton had an assist. Goalie Lilliana Villa recorded the shutout.

Diamond Dragons open with 8-1 rout of Clarke Central
TYLER COLE homered, Max Ford ripped a pair of doubles and Matt Bowen pitched four innings for the win as the Jefferson baseball team beat Clark Central 8-1 Tuesday night in its season opener.
Jefferson (1-0) hosts rival Commerce Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Bowen (1-0) surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out seven.
Ford finished 2-for-3 with and RBI, while Cole was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ryan Johnson also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
