JEFFERSON moved into second place in Region 8-AA South with a 61-57 victory over subregion co-leader Elbert County Tuesday on the road.
Austin Thompson led Jefferson (9-7, 4-1) with 21 points, which included converting 10-of-11 free throws. He went 5-for-6 in the fourth quarter as the Dragons pulled out the victory.
“I thought it was a huge step forward for us,” coach Bolling DuBose said.
Will Puckett added 11 points for Jefferson, which led 41-28 at one point in the third quarter. Elbert County rallied to take a 54-51 lead in the fourth but the Dragons regained the lead with some big shots down the stretch and Thompson’s free throw shooting.
“I thought that showed a lot of mental toughness,” DuBose said of his team.

“Our girls played extremely hard,” coach Jason Gibson said. “I’m extremely proud of their effort. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.”
The Lady Dragons missed four free throws in the final 20 seconds and went 6-for-28 from the charity stripe on the night.
Jefferson trailed this nip-and-tuck ball game 14-12 at the end of the half and 24-20 after three quarters.
Kellie Goza led Jefferson with nine points while Brianna Whatley added eight.
