The Commerce Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its youth baseball/softball program beginning Friday, Jan. 13 and ending Friday, Jan. 27.
Registrations are taken 1-5 p.m. at the recreation office at American Veterans Memorial Park on Carson Street. After-hours registration is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26, when the office will stay open until 7 p.m.
Birth certificates are required for all participants. Parents of past parents can call 706-335-3236 to verify whether or not a certificate for their child is on file.
Age control dates help determine a child’s placement. There are age control dates for all divisions of softball and baseball as well as entry-level T-ball.
Those dates are as follows: T-ball, girls must be 4 before Jan. 1, boys must be 4 before May 1; softball, age before Jan. 1; baseball, age before May 1.
The competitive divisions are: T-ball (ages 4 co-ed and 5 girls only); coach pitch (ages 5-6 boys); pee wee baseball (ages 7-8); pee wee softball (ages 6-8); minor league baseball (ages 9-10); minor league softball (ages 9-10); freshmen league baseball (ages 11-12); freshmen league softball (ages 11-12); sophomore league baseball (ages 13-14); sophomore league softball (ages 13-14).
Additionally, there are changes related to competition in the pee wee softball and pee wee baseball leagues that will be instituted this season.
In softball, the division will no longer involve kid/coach pitch. It will become a coach-pitch only league. Also, this division will begin to keep score during the game.
