Shelton leads Lady Cats in tourney opener

The Apalachee High School girls basketball team opened play in the Peach State Holiday Invitational Tuesday with a 66-51 victory against Jordan High School of North Carolina.

Saboyce Shelton scored 29 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Wildcats, who improved to 7-2 for the season. Ryan Burke added eight points and 11 rebounds while Jasmine Bell finished with 13 points.

“We played very well in the first half,” said AHS coach Michael Parks. “Jordan got back in the game in the second half, but then our defense was able to take over.”

The Lady Wildcats advanced in the winner’s bracket and was scheduled to face Rockdale County Wednesday (today) at 4:30 p.m.

“There were several college coaches there,” Parks said. “Each one was interested in a different player. That was something we really liked to see.”
