A 28-point performance from senior Saboyce Shelton helped the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats improve their record to 4-0 after a 74-55 road win against Monroe Area Tuesday night.
Shelton helped spark AHS early, scoring 15 points in the first quarter, as the Lady Wildcats are off to their best start in program history. Monroe Area hung around early as there were six lead changes in the first quarter, but Shelton scored her teamís final six points for a 19-11 advantage after the first eight minutes.
From that point, AHS took control and led 40-18 at halftime.
“It takes us a while to get us going,” said coach Michael Parks. “Once we got our offense going, we felt good about things. The girls are excited about being 4-0.”
Kiarra Sanford helped the Lady Cats to victory Tuesday night with 17 points. Jasmin Bell finished with nine points while Tamaica Morrow scored five. Parks was able to use all team members in the game.
AHS will travel to East Jackson Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest before hosting Loganville Tuesday.
Next week concludes with a road game against Cedar Shoals Friday and a home game with Archer on Saturday, Dec. 17.
“We have a tough stretch of games coming up,” Parks said. “Our goal before the season started was to have some success before we played in the Christmas tournament.”
Katie Dean and Aliyah Taylor both scored four points in Tuesday’s game against Monroe Area while Kyndaisha Williams finished with three. Tia Carter and Ryan Burke both scored two points.
Veteran Lady Canes coach Stephanie Hines-Smith was impressed by Apalachee.
“They have a good team,î the Monroe Area coach said. “I know they’ve been working toward this season for a long time. Winning games early like this is always a positive when you are trying to build on your confidence.”
