Led by Rachel Pasko’s 16th-place finish in her final high school meet, Jackson County placed fifth as a team in the Nov. 4 Class AA meet in Carrollton. This is the second consecutive top-five finish for Jackson County.
“We knew going in that we could be anywhere from fourth through sixth realistically,” Brubaker said. “We didn’t have as many PRs as we did last year but we still ran a good race.”
Pasko, who led the team all year, ran a 20:40. Sydney Baird followed Pasko with a 21:25 to finish 25th. Others scoring were Maddie Newton (38th, 21:58), Ashley Burton (53rd, 22:41) and Michayla Scollon (52nd, 22:43).
Jackson County, which ran an average time of 21:53, finished second among public schools in Class AA and second among Region 8-AA teams behind only North Oconee (fourth). Westminster, Blessed Trinity and Lovett finished in the top three spots in Class AA.
“I was happy that we finished fifth,” Brubaker said. “I thought that we ran well. We can’t be disappointed … I’m not. I’m excited that we came in fifth.”
Brubaker noted that finishing ahead of Greater Atlanta Christian was quite an accomplishment.
As for next year, four of the five runners who scored at state are returning. Brubaker said he hopes to have a pack of runners that will provide the points next year.
“Hopefully, we’ll have a pack next year,” he said. “For the runners we have now to improve, they’re going to have to put in a little more work. They have so much natural talent, and we’ve been able to get a lot out of that.”
