The Commerce Rec Department’s 12U football team won the NGYFA conference championship Saturday in its inaugural year of league competition. The undefeated Tigers outscored Fannin County 14-6 at Lumpkin County High School.
The teams battled defensively in the first quarter, reported coach Travis Legg, with Fannin County proving a big, physical squad.
Both teams scored in the second quarter, however, with Commerce finding the end zone on a 20-yard run by Cole Chancey. The Fannin Rebels immediately retaliated by returning the kickoff for a touchdown, making the halftime score 6-6.
In the third quarter, Commerce moved the ball downfield with a key, 25-yard reception by Nick “Goat” Patrick. On third down and goal from the 12-yard line, Chase Forrester’s scored the Tigers’ second touchdown. Owen Brown ran in the extra point, which put Commerce ahead 14-6.
The Tiger defense shut down the Rebels in the fourth quarter to secure the championship for Commerce, which ended the season 11-0. In all this season, the team dominated, outscoring its opponents 399-31.
Legg also thanked the huge group of Commerce fans who flocked to support his squad. He expects the city will continue to take notice of the players on this Tiger team in the future.
“This is by far the most athletic and physical group of boys that I have ever coached,” Legg said. “This is the future of Commerce football.”
