It was a historic night for the Eagles of East Jackson, as the team recorded their first region football win in school's history with a 38 - 7 victory over Oglethorpe County.
The Eagles controlled the gridiron all night, rushing for a total of 256 yards, with 43 passing yards by quarterback Evan Williamson.
Robbie King scored three touchdowns on the night, while Standrick Stevens and C.J. Allen both scored one each.

write up on football. But every week i am disappointed
at the article i am reading. I am not sure if you, as a
sports reporter are actually going to the games or are
you getting your information from others. But if you are
at the games it has to be very obvious that the defense has
played a hugh role in the games. Especially in the last
game against oglethope county. But every week this has
been almost a mute point and clearly not mentioned about
the importance of our defense. I as a reader and a mom of
a defensive starter would like to here more about who is
leading the team in tackles during the game and for the season up to this point and who is making game
changing plays on defense. And if you didnt know our
defense only allowed 106 yards during this last game that
is something to write about. And if your not at the games ask the coach about defense in a little more detail. Thanks from ne of your loyal reader and a subsciber
First of all, please understand that we're a very sparsely staffed news organization that's spread razor thin trying to cover all of the high schools in our area. A comment was made that someone "wondered if I was actually attending the games."
Well, as both Coach Caputo and Coach Savage in Commerce can tell you, I'm not able to attend every game, because I actually cover both high school programs. I have to pick which game to cover each week, depending on scheduling, distance, if it's a region game, or a game with region or playoff possibilities.
That means that when I cover either school in person, I'm generally unable to cover the other at the same time (although I have driven from one to the other when both have had home games - try doing that and keeping everything straight in your head!). When I'm there in person, my main task is to take as many photos as I can to make sure that, on a week I'm not able to attend that team's game, I can make sure I have photos to run with our stories.
That means that much of the information I use comes from my own hastily scribbled notes, and (for the most part) from the stats sheets that the coaches are kind enough to send to me.
Last year, while everyone was still getting situated, sometimes getting the information was a little hit or miss. This year, the coaches have done a great job in getting me the stats, but we're still getting everything ironed out. When I have had the defensive stats, I've tried to make sure they get in. But if I don't have those stats......well, I can't just make them up.
I have the earliest deadline of all the MainStreet newspapers (The Commerce News is the main source for East Jackson coverage, with the Jackson Herald being secondary). I generally have to have my stories done and my pages in by about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. When you consider that some teams don't have their stats available until noon on Tuesday (which is not generally the case with East Jackson, thank goodness!), you can see how things can get tight.
So, as you can see, with more schools to cover than we can ever possibly hope to have people to cover in the stat-by-stat way we'd like to, that puts us in a situation where we have to essentially do the best job we can with what we have to work with.
When you add to that the fact that we don't have the space in our pages this year that we did in East Jackson's inaugural year (we've had to essentially write shorter stories on all sports to compensate out of sheer necessity - two weeks ago, I had exactly a page and a half in the Commerce News to put eight stories on four different sports from two high schools, with photos), I'm basically left to honestly do the best that I can from week to week.
I'd love to mention everything done by every member of the team. I want folks to be happy with what they read, the coverage they get, and the way they are represented. Certainly that's the plan I laid out when I took the job a year and a half ago.
But, as John Lennon once said, life is what happens while you're busy making plans.
Thanks again for reading and buying the paper, and as I said, I'll put everything in the story that I get on the stat sheets from the coaches. They're busy folks, trying to not only win football games, but also to educate your kids (which I've always put ahead of football, to be honest), so I try not to pester them too much. They're good folks, and they'll get the information to me as they can.
Thanks, and may the God of your choice bless you and keep you.

an issue for you. But all we are asking is that you give
defense there due and give equal time in your articles.
And maybe have coach elaborate on his defense a
little more and give you a little run down of
how his defense held off the offense and maybe who is
leading in tackles.
wow...can you say glory hound? sure it is nice to be written about in the paper but it seems to me like you just want your kid to be recognized or put in the spot light...he must be the leading tackler or else i am sure you wouldn't be interested in who was leading in tackles...great values you are teaching your kid...you are right everyone should focus on him...
Brandon, buddy, you are doing a fine job.
Looks like mom posted while Johnny was at practice, told Johnny about it over dinner and encouraged Johnny to concur with her post online.
Here's the deal, bud. If you are a DEFENSIVE LINEMAN and you are making tackles you are NOT doing your job, sir.
The job of a defensive lineman is to take up as many blockers as he possibly can, thereby allowing the linebackers to roam sideline to sideline making the tackles.
Check out stat pages for ANY NCAA or NFL team. You will NOT find a defensive tackle who leads his team in tackles.
As far as just begging for coverage goes, the fact that a mom is eliciting responses- from a Senior Sports Editor for a regional newspaper no less- to support her son and his friends is incredible.
Mom, come on. We all know you love your son but wear the button picture on Friday night and boo the officials on cue from the other fans- don't dog out the sports editor for not praising your son in the paper. Football is a team sport and he's one of probably 60 or 70 on the squad.
Don't be "that mom".
By the way, Brandon, I'm sorry you'll never be able to get that part of your life back- wait, there goes 5 of mine!
If I want a recitation of each player's stats, I'll get that from the coach.
Every-body can't be in every-story, every-week. Just be proud of your son's team!
I never said that i made tackles im talking about linmen in general. We never get any recognition. Maybe say something like that d-line aloud very few yards through the line. Or say something like that o-line was dominate and gave the quarterback time all night to make the big plays and so he can be in the newspaper. And i dont know where you got the idea about where d-linemen are not supossed to make tackles from. Of course we are not going to make the tackles on the sidelines , but have you to know union county ran for a big play and our DE was the one who made the tackle 30 yards down field. To kathy w you want to know what the team did well, lets see all read in the paper was about the quarterback and running backs for three paragraphs and defense got 2 sentences. wow that a lot about the "TEAM".
than getting a shout out about your defensive line in
the local paper. Can you tell me how many grammatical
errors are in your post? Remember it is high school
football not your entire life. I'd much rather read
that you grow up to be someone in your life than just
the kid with the most tackles in last weeks football
game.
I don't even understand what your sentence to me says, but I think you're trying to say other players get glory in the stories that make it to print. Well, I think those players who performed the best should be mentioned, however, I don't have the time or the inclination to read a story that repeats to me every stat on every player.
You might want to consider that part of the lesson YOU are supposed to learn from all of this is that oftentimes in all areas of life, you do what you're supposed to do and no one thanks you. Deal with it.
